If you want a ragtop pickup, are you going to buy a Gladiator at 8 times this price? A Dakota? Get real.

And alternative fuels? This engine will burn anything you throw at it.

I could actually afford this right now, except I’m about to buy something else. A shame. I imagine the 14(!!) spare tires alone are worth at least a grand. How often do you buy a vehicle with 14 spare tires?

Kinja'd!!!

And matching trailer. What a steal.

Personally, Id really like to get an M1 078. It loses the multi-fuel engine, but gains full time AWD, CTIS, and a much more efficient* and powerful* CAT C7 turbodiesel.

*By efficient and powerful I mean 4 MPG amd 300 HP vs something probably measured in GPM and 134 HP.

True. But I dunno, I still like the 1078s.  And you can get them surplus pretty cheap.  If I had a place to keep one, Id probably get it. In fact a neighbor in the community behind mine has one. Sadly my community has a covenant forbidding military vehicles.

Why not? I mean, other than the impossible turning radius, lack of power steering, and  noise level that’ll crush your hearing.

The noise level is so bad that when I drove them in the Army, ear muffs were mandatory. And lack of power steering does not begin to describe how difficult they are to steer. And the steering is damped in no way, so if you are off road and you bump something, the steering wheel can spin violently and easily break your wrist or your thumb. The Deuce-and-a-half is to motor vehicles what the 8-pound sledge hammer is to hand tools.

I know a guy who has some M35 variant and a matching trailer. I think he has a hard top, and he doesn’t have a cover in back. He actually uses it sometimes, though he doesn’t really need it anymore and is probably going to sell (or at least try to, I’m sure he wants way more than it’s worth) .

I understand having one just because they’re cool to park in your yard and take it out for a holiday parades.

But since you mention the word “realistically”, is there anything that it would be useful for in the real world?

Farm and construction is exactly what this guy used it for. For a while he had a large water tank in the back. Water is way heavier than most people realize when you start moving usefully-large quantities, plus it sloshes around so it’s a little uncomfortable to haul it in something small.

As long as you’re not driving commercially, you can even drive a 5 ton, twice this big, without a special license. Your state might have more stringent requirements but that doesn’t seem to be the case in general.

Not that it’s a terrible idea to get a CDL for this, but that sounds like a lot of work.

Absolutely your regular drivers license on the Deuce , I reviewed one for my YouTube channel and did some research to make sure it was legal for me to drive it on the streets, to date the heaviest vehicle I have ever driven . The 5 ton? Depends on your state, but the GWVR is well past the 26,001# so you likely do need that bigger license (which come in non-cdl format as well).

Obligatory Self Promotion is much appreciated. That thing seemed like an absolute beast to drive, albeit a slow beast, but a beast nonetheless. I’m guessing the guy in the passenger’s seat owned the truck? He seemed to know a bit about it.

I went ahead and subscribed and holy hell, you make a lot of good stuff! You must have some serious connections to be able to get your hands on all those cars. If you don’t mind me asking, how do you get your hands on so many rides ? I’d love to do something like this, but I only have access to my car and my roommates car, whereas you seem to be doing well with it!

Also, what are the logistics of making one of these videos , like what’s your camera/equipment setup? Anything I’ve done in the past I’ve typically done on my iPhone, which works, but isn’t great. You had shots outside the truck and inside the truck, and each angle looked great , but what staggered me the most was the mic. It must’ve been loud as hell in there, and the audio sounded really crisp.

Kinja'd!!! TheDutchTexan > Taylor Martin
09/16/2020 at 01:25

Kinja'd!!!0

That was indeed the owner in the passenger seat. I never drive cars without the owner present unless it is my personal car.

As far as getting my hands on those cars, I started out with my 2005 Mustang just for kicks after watching that dude in blue. Then I did my grand marquis, a friends C3 vette, a family members V2 CTSV and then out of the blue a guy with a 300 SRT contacted me asking me if I wanted to review his car. I did and never looked back. The DFW community knows me by now, and I keep getting reviews here and there. Now we are in a bit of a lull due to the current situation, but I should be reviewing a cool truck this weekend and I got 2 other cars I might be able to review in the future . I hope that once the elections are done everything quickly returns to normal. But even if it doesn’t and I couldn’t review a single car anymore? I look back on 60+ cars ranging from below 100hp to 1000hp. Something I could not even fathom when I first started. It was worth all those hours in the editing chair. Met so many great people. And drove cars I could only dream of driving. I really don’t want it to stop! My dream? 100K subscribers and it turning into a real job. Starting a project car. Doing collabs with bigger YouTubers I have followed for years. But first things first... lets crack 10K subscribers and see where we go from there.

Gear wise I am running 3 sony action cams on suction cups and an a6000 attached to a slider rig with a fluid head for the glamour shots. I use my car as a camera platform for the external shots, all done with the action cams . My gear is years old now, but still runs. Not upgrading for a while yet (unless my hand is forced).

The reviews take anywhere from 30-40 hours to put together.Definitely a labor of love. I’ve been trying to hit 10K subscribers for years. Still not there. And trust me, nothing more frustrating than uploading a 1000hp Camaro ZL1 review you spent 40 hours on and only ending up with 300 ish views in the first two weeks. If any of the bigger automotive YouTubers posts a video like that it’s 100K views in the first month. I’m somewhat OK with it though, being a smaller YouTuber means you have less issues with haters and no issues clout chasers. And those people I can’t stand.

If you want to try just start with your own car and see where it ends up. Show the passion, if it’s forced people will pick up on that in a heartbeat. You could make it big, but in my experience? If you don’t break 100K subscribers in the first year it will be a uphill battle. And it has broken me to the point of quitting. But the community said no... you shouldn’t quit. Dangled an R35 in my face. Review this. And I did... And I am still here!

That’s awesome dude! I’m glad this all just sort of fell into place for you, and I’m not surprised people in the Dallas area know you by now. . I’ve done a bit of YouTube in the past, so I know what you mean by long editing sessions (truth be told, I love to edit, so I don’t mind the multi-day editing sessions, or the low video performance figures. Sure, it stinks to not be super popular, but if you’re small you have a small community and can engage with each and every one of them.

Also, I like that you’re using old gear, because that means it’s cheaper online, and budgeting is everything, so thank for that. Do you not use a specific microphone because I’d be completely shocked. That sony action cam records real nice audio. I’ll do some shopping and see what’s next.

If I ever get down to Texas (which I’m sure I will one day, though maybe not in the near future) you’re more than welcome to drive my wagon. Granted, it certainly won’t be as exciting as a 1000hp Camaro, but it’s something. Keep making cool stuff, I’m excited to see you hit 10k!

Editing to be honest is my least exiting thing to do. Even more so when I have to pull out all the stops due to equipment not filming everything or having to get into the audio to get rid of brake squeal and stuff like that. If it goes smooth I got no problem. But at the end of each review I instantly know if I am going to have a good time or a crappy time editing. Reviews can go great, or not great at all with lots of screw-ups . Which means I am cutting a lot. Car shows are easy peasy. Still take 10-15 hours all in but it’s straight forward. Those videos I really enjoy start to finish (editing still the least favorite part).

All the audio is inboard. I do get issues with wind noise sometimes but it is what it is. I have seen too many people run an external microphone and then tell everyone the video won’t come out because they forgot to turn their mic on, didn’t plug it in properly or it simply didn’t record audio for xyz reason. Sony always did do pretty good with inboard microphones IMHO! That is part of the reason why I still run my gear. If I want to go to 4K 60 It means a canon camera (Sony rigs get expensive) and gopro’s. And the audio in gopro’s are always lacking. AND I hear they tend to overheat worse than my action cams.

Also, I would love to drive your TSX wagon. I always thought they looked especially sharp, especially the side and rear profile. The only thing I didn’t like about them is the fact they didn’t stuff the V6 under the hood and mated it to a 6 speed manual. That would have been BOMB! Biggest slap in the face of the enthusiast however was not offering the 6 speed with the inline 4 like you could have in the sedan. Honda... WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!

Kinja'd!!! Taylor Martin > TheDutchTexan

Yeah, editing is tedious, but I still don’t mind the tranquility of being in the editing bay. I bet car shows are easier because it’s a bunch of events happening/cars being shown rather than just two or so camera angles. Sony certainly must be good with inboard audio, it’s really crisp. But I don’t think it’s as easy to forget to turn on the audio than you think. How much do you think your setup cost you back in the day?

A trick I like to use when editing longform videos with hours of footage is to look at the soundwaves. There are plenty of times where you screw up a line and want to redo it, but there’s also a lot of time where you’re just silent. If you look where the soundwaves peak (and more importantly, where they don’t) you can skip the parts where you’re not talking. Also, if you’ve recorded a lot of takes of a line, there’s a good chance the last take will be your favorite.

I’m a bit sad the car isn’t a manual, but I’m really glad it’s a wagon. My next car will likely be a stick, even if it’s a super cheap beater that I can practice on. My friends mom has talked about selling her Honda CR-V with a 5 speed, and because I know her I’d get a friends and family discount. It’s suuuuuper tempting, but I also don’t have a place to put it or my own job to really pay for it (and the insurance). Even still, the car is a blast to drive and handles like a dream!
